June is celebrated as Pride Month to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Uprising that occurred over six days in New York City starting on June 28 that year.

Sally Jan Priesand was ordained as the first woman rabbi in the United States on June 3, 1972.

On June 19, Juneteenth, the oldest celebration that commemorates the ending of slavery, is observed nationally. It began in Galveston, TX in 1865 and spread across the United States as African American Emancipation Day.

The Poor People's Campaign, carried out by Ralph Abernathy in the wake of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, concluded on June 24, 1968. It was organized to demand economic and human rights for poor Americans of diverse backgrounds.
